Deciding Between an Annual or Perpetual License?

Review the advantages of our annual and perpetual licenses to help you decide on the licensing model that best fits your organization.

Annual licenses, also known as subscription or software as a service licenses, are often the most cost-effective solution for an organization as license fees are spread evenly over the life of the contract and all updates, upgrades, and technical support is included in the licensing fee. In addition, annual licenses are usually purchased out of an organization's operating budget, which can be easier to access than capital budgets.

Perpetual licenses are the opposite of annual licenses. In the perpetual model of licensing, you make an upfront, one-time purchase of the licenses. The main benefit of a perpetual license is that it can provide the best return on investment over the long term. However, perpetual licenses are typically purchased from an organization's captial budget and not the operational budget. Capital budgets are often harder to access and you never know how easy or difficult it will be in the future to make changes and add licenses.

Although perpetual licenses only include maintenance for the first year, you can purchase additional coverage that includes all updates, upgrades, and technical support.

Take Advantage of Additional Licensing Options to Fit Your Organization

Have a large number of Dragonfly users that need to use software, but only a subset that will be active at any given time?

Our Floating Licenses allows sharing across a pool of users by providing a single key that specifies the total number of users that can concurrently use the software.

If you purchase floating licenses, Dragonfly will run on any computer that can communicate with the network license server. The number of licenses that can be issued at any given time by the server depends on the number of licenses you purchase.

  • Completely flexible – unlimited installations/activations across your organization.
  • Each instance of the product launched will consume one concurrent seat.
  • Includes bundled maintenance plan.
  • License server required to verify number of seats in use and available.

Guidelines to Distinguish Non-Commercial and Commercial Use

You may only use Dragonfly under the terms of a relevant license agreement. The applicable license agreement depends on your use of the software, which can be summarized as follows:

  • Non-commercial use is subject to the terms of our Non-Commercial License Agreement. Non-commercial licenses are granted free-of-charge to qualified researchers, academics, and non-commercial developers for non-profit research, academic study, or development purposes only. Non-commercial licenses are valid for a one-year period and can be renewed annually at no charge.
  • Any use of Dragonfly for commercial purposes requires a commercial license. Commercial licenses are available as an annual subscription or as a perpetual license.

The term non-commercial, as used in the context of Dragonfly licensing, means academic research or other activities that are not undertaken for financial gain, advantage, or other reward and that are not intended to produce works, services, or data for commercial use. However, you should note that whether a particular use of Dragonfly is non-commercial or commercial depends on the use of the software, not the user.
